Taking a day trip to Mt Fuji from Tokyo is one of the most popular things to do in Japan. Japan isn’t short of scenery but if you want to see Mt Fuji, heading to the Kawaguchiko Five Lakes District is a must-see.

The trip is easy and with the accessibility of Japan’s efficient transportation network, there’s no reason why you can’t make this happen.

TRAVELING TO KAWAGUCHIKO BY TRAIN

My favorite way to see Japan is by train. The rail system is second to none in the world. And, if you plan on doing any traveling around the country outside of the city, you should look into purchasing a rail pass.

Japan Rail Pass is essentially like a Euro Rail Pass. It’s really quite expensive to take the Shinkansen so budget ahead of time to determine if you’ll be better off with this pass.

You can use Hyperdia to plan your train times around Japan. See my Japan Rail Guide: Using Hyperdia to Travel Japan.

Traveling to Kawaguchiko Station by Bus

Kawaguchiko Station can be reached in about two and a half hours by bus from Tokyo JR Highway Bus Terminal in front of Tokyo Station, Yaesu exit side. The price is 1800 Yen, the return ticket is 3280 Yen. However, you will need to make a reservation to go to Kawaguchigo Station and return to Tokyo by bus.

If you’re into this spooky kind of stuff like I am, you might find it curious to take a trip to one of the world’s creepiest and darkest destinations. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to the Aokigahara Suicide ForestSchedule a tour with Viator to explore the Mt Fuji Ice Cave with Aokigahra.

3. Climb or Visit Mt. Fuji

Of course, taking a trip to the Mt Fuji region won’t be complete until you’ve climbed this mountain or at least seen the base of it. However, if you intend on climbing Mt Fuji, you should know that during peak season in the summer, it can get really crowded. And during the fall, it can get really quite cold at the top so make sure to dress well.

If you want to climb Mt Fuji, there’s a direct Highway Bus from Shinjuku Station to Mt Fuji 5th Station during the summer season. The bus fare is generally around 2700 yen each way.

4. Take a Tour

Viator is a popular tour company that has a variety of different tours around the world. You can easily book a day trip to and from Tokyo with this company and the best part is that you don’t actually need to worry about making the arrangements yourself. There are pros and cons to taking tours but if you’re intimidated by traveling around Japan and feel the language barrier is too much, look into Viator tours.
