Isolation: A Photo Essay of Alcatraz at Night
The sky was grey and misty rain beaded on my window as I watched the small waves in the ocean break. Our boat responded to every pulse of the current with a gentle sway that mimicked the lonely and vast body. A reminder of its inherent unkindness.
I traced a sailboat in the distance until I lost its sight on the horizon. The city all but disappeared, as if we crossed an invisible boundary making the journey feel more finite.
The boat docked and a blunt force wave slammed us, so inconsiderately jolting the vessel and our stomaches not unlike a leaf strung along in the wind. Powerless, like a prisoner on the island, I looked up and welcomed myself.
